Unfortunately, photographer harassment is on the rise. Barely a week goes by where I don’t hear about some photographer being told they can’t take photos in a public place. Well, in order to fight it, we need to know when and where it happens! To do this, DCPhotoGuide is asking you to submit stories of photographer harassment to us. Our intent is to create a map of DC showing all the places that photographers have been told to not take photos. Each point on the map will include details of the incident so you can find out exactly what happened.
You’ll be able to use this data to either avoid shooting in places where harassment is common, or (my preference) use the data as a guide to where you should schedule your next photowalk!
Things to keep in mind before submitting your story:
- The incident MUST have taken place on public property. Private property but public space is a little too much of a gray area. Private property that is a public space would include places such as shopping malls. For the time being, I’d like to leave these out.
- Please let us know if it was a private security guard or a public servant that told you to stop. Was it a rent-a-cop who is only accountable to the company that hired them or was it a police officer accountable to the American people and/or citizens of DC?
- Let us know when it happened to the best of your ability. We don’t really need exact dates but try to estimate when it happened.
- Remember, being told that you cannot use a tripod is not the same as being told not to photograph something.
